The water buffalo is a cultural symbol of Thailand, as Thai farmers have used this animal to plow rice fields since ancient times. The number of Thai water buffaloes has fallen sharply since the introduction of tractors to help in rice farming.
Nonetheless, for Thai rice farmers, the water buffalo is their best friend, although its population has declined. Water buffaloes were once quite plentiful in Thailand.
