This sculpture presents a Chinese dragon whose body is formed from organically shaped Brazilian liana wood, allowing nature itself to define its movement and flow. The head, claws, and scaled details are meticulously hand-moulded in sterling silver, each element shaped in direct response to the wood’s natural curves and contours. Embellished with tiger’s eye stone and finished with 24K gold leaf accents, the piece reflects the technical challenge of working with irregular organic material — where every form must be carefully adapted, balanced, and crafted around the unique character of the liana.
As a totem, Dragons traditionally symbolise potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it in East Asian culture. The Dragon is also the fifth of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. The Year of the Dragon is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 辰, pronounced chen.
Liana is a jungle vine, notable for its organic twisting form, found in the tropical and temperate climate in the Mountains of Brazil. Each section of the vine is selected for its aesthetic and functional qualities, before being dried, hollowed out and treated. Liana is widely popular and has been available to European vivarium enthusiasts for years. With its unique surface and texture, liana offers a truly exotic accent with no two pieces being the same. Liana wood is rather rare and the one used may be over 100 years old.
This piece can be placed at an entrance of a home, a centrepiece in any luxurious living room or office. It took 6 craftsmen over 3 months to complete this piece from design to wax carving the Silver texture to finish.
