This red lacquer rhino is hand-carved by master craftsmen, with key features accented in metal, ears formed from red cow leather, and a horn sculpted from hand-carved teak wood. Combining sculptural craftsmanship with functionality, the piece serves as both a decorative object and a striking accent stool within an interior.
The creation of carved lacquer objects is an exceptionally labour-intensive process that can require years of specialised craftsmanship to complete. The rich red surface, traditionally known as cinnabar or “dragon blood”, is derived from lacquer made using the natural sap of the lacquer tree. Celebrated for its durability, lacquer is naturally water resistant, capable of withstanding high temperatures, and has remained one of Asia’s most enduring decorative materials for thousands of years.
Across Asia, lacquer craftsmanship evolved into a highly refined art form valued for its depth, resilience, and luminous finish. The sculptural surface of this rhino reflects that heritage while introducing playful character and strong visual presence.
Symbolically, rhinos represent inner peace, solitude, agility, freedom, and unconventionality. Their connection to the earth is reflected through their immense weight and grounded physicality. The rhinoceros is also recognised for its powerful horn, from which its name derives — meaning “nose horn”. Different rhinoceros species carry either one or two horns, further contributing to their distinct identity and symbolic strength.
Hand-carved red lacquer rhino stool with metal detailing, created as a luxury accent stool, oriental lacquer sculpture, and collectible decorative furniture piece. This handcrafted lacquer stool belongs within luxury home décor, artisan furniture, and statement animal-inspired interiors, combining traditional cinnabar lacquer craftsmanship with sculptural form and symbolic feng shui meaning. Ideal as decorative seating, a conversation piece, or a luxury interior accent, it offers a one of a kind design for collectors of lacquer furniture, animal sculptures, and handcrafted Asian décor.
This unique creation by Lotus Arts de Vivre required more than twelve months to complete.
