Hand Carved Ebony Cup

A beautifully hand-carved cup crafted from ebony wood, elegantly decorated with radiant peridot gemstones set in gold-plated silver and finished with 24K gold leaf, both as an exterior embellishment and as an interior lining. Ebony is a dense black hardwood derived from the Ancient Egyptian hbny. So dense that it sinks in water, the wood is valued for its fine texture and exceptionally smooth finish when polished, making it highly prized as an ornamental material. By the late sixteenth century, fine cabinets for the luxury trade were frequently crafted from ebony. Its dense hardness also made it ideal for refined mouldings and intricate low-relief carvings, often depicting allegorical subjects or scenes drawn from classical history.
